Aikido is a Japanese martial art that was first developed in the early 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba, combining his martial studies with his philosophical and religious beliefs. Like its ancestor art Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, it is a defensive style that focuses on throwing and grappling rather than striking, redirecting an opponent's attack rather than opposing it directly. Different schools of aikido vary greatly in their approaches, however, all of them emphasize trying to avoid causing harm to the attacker.
